INDOOR GROUPS

In addition to our core ensemble courses (Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble), Garnet Valley High School students are encouraged to participate in one of our amazing Indoor Co-Curricular Performing Groups!  These groups meet outside the school day and provide opportunities for you to develop your skills, learn new skills, compete, and travel to other schools, all along having a great time with friends. Our indoor programs include Indoor Color Guard, Indoor Drumline, Jazz Band and various student-run Small Ensembles.  Learn more below and click to sign-up or get more information!

Indoor Color Guard

Our Indoor Color Guard is a competitive group that rehearses and performs an indoor color guard show based on a new conceptual and musical theme each season.  Open to any interested GVHS student.  More detailed info about our indoor color guard program can be found here.  If you are interested, attend the interest meetings in the GVHS Band Room on Nov 1 at 6pm.  Email questions to Director Megan Karwoski at gvcgstaff@gmail.com

Overview:

  • Interest Meeting & Auditions are held in November (Nov 1, 2022 at 6pm - GVHS Band Room) The season spans November to late April, concluding with finals/championships in April.

  • High level of commitment required.   The Indoor Guard rehearses twice during the week and on Saturdays.  Attendance at all practices and performances is required.

  • Dues of $350 per member (limit $650 per family) help to fund the many expenses involved with running a competitive indoor guard program.  Including: custom uniforms, travel, equipment, competition fees, and more.  Additionally, members are expected to participate in fundraising activities.

Indoor Drumline

Our Indoor Drumline is a competitive group that rehearses and performs an indoor drumline show based on a new conceptual and musical theme each season.  Open to any interested GVHS student.  Students who join up new to the program (and are not already enrolled in a band or percussion class) are required to register for percussion class.  If you are interested, attend the interest meetings in the GVHS Band Room on 11/7 and 11/9 after band practice (9pm).  Email questions to Director Nick Kern gvpindoorstaff@gmail.com

Jazz Band

The Garnet Valley HS Jazz Program includes 2 jazz bands, small jazz combos, and a student-run brass band.  The Competition Jazz Band requires students to audition for placement, and Jazz Lab Band is open to all students with no audition required.  Auditions & Rehearsals kick off in November.  Get all the info at the jazz band website: www.gvhsmusic.org/jazz

COMPETITION JAZZ BAND​

  • Limited to standard Jazz Band instrumentation 

  • Full Ensemble rehearsals Thursdays 4:30-7pm, plus weekly sectionals

  • Attends several festivals/competitions each Spring

  • Student dues of $50 help to fund necessary expenses such as competition registration fees and travel expenses.

  • Audition required: Access the audition materials and timeline at www.gvhsmusic.org/jazz

 

JAZZ LAB BAND

  • Open to all students interested in jazz

  • Rehearsals Tuesdays after school until 2:45 - 4:00pm 

  • Performs at some community/school events

  • Flexible instrumentation (more players able to participate)

  • Audition not required - simply complete the registration form

Small Ensembles

As an extension of our Concert Band and Wind Ensemble classes, students are encouraged to participate in one of our many small ensemble opportunities.  Small Ensembles can take many forms.  They are typically between 3-12 musicians, often of the same instrument type, such as flute ensemble, saxophone quartet, brass quintet, etc.  Additionally, there are other common small ensembles of mixed instruments, such as the wood quintet, which includes flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn and bassoon.

Overview:

  • Small Ensembles are student-led.  Ask Dr. Selfridge about the current small ensembles available to join.

  • Each ensemble schedules a day to rehearse during Learn and meets at least once a week in the band room

  • The music performed by our small ensembles is a mix of concert/classical repertoire and lighter/pop selections.

  • Small Ensembles perform several times throughout the year, including the Celebration of the Arts, and at selected concerts.

  • Current small ensembles include: Flute Ensemble, Saxophone Ensemble, Brass Quintet, Clarinet Ensemble, Low Winds Ensemble, and Percussion Ensemble.
